An Encore Career: Physicians Making the Third Act Meaningful

Dr. Chris Carruthers and Dr. Mamta Gautam

Abstract

This workshop/presentation explores the challenges and opportunities for physicians who seek a career transition in the later years of their medical careers - an Encore Career. This is an essential part of their retirement years, a phase often referred to as life’s Third Act, which may or may not include medical practice.

Physicians have always worked later in their careers as compared to other professionals, and their retirement age is increasing. We are all facing an increase in longevity, and the challenge is in how to best plan for these years. By identifying our core values, skills and strengths, we can better understand what we enjoy and are passionate about, and how to best plan for a Third Act. We will identify major emotional, physical, and social challenges in this transition, and address the need to plan ahead to ensure what we do is personally meaningful and relevant. We will offer suggestions for personal, peer, and organizational resources, and discuss how to create an action plan for positive change. The process and challenges of change as one moves forward will be addressed. Rich use of vignettes and case studies will assist in promoting further understanding and future discussion.
